Hawking nominated for top US medal

Professor Stephen Hawking has been awarded the United States' highest civilian honour, a White House spokesman has announced.
The scientist, who is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, is one of 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom announced today.
The medal recognises an individual's "especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours".
