G7 in vow to fight protectionism
Updated on 14 February 2009
The G7 group of major economies, including Britain, restated its determination to fight protectionism during the current global downturn.
Amid growing pressure at a national level for action to protect domestic jobs and industries, G7 finance ministers and central bankers meeting in Rome warned that protectionist policies would exacerbate a severe downturn which they expect to persist "through most of 2009".
The ministers, including Chancellor Alistair Darling, issued a communique promising to take "any further action that may prove necessary" to restore battered confidence in the global financial system.
