From war to peace
Updated on 28 July 2005
The IRA ends the armed struggle after 30 years of violence that killed thousands.
"The day when peace replaced war," that's how the Prime Minister described the IRAs pledge to END violence and criminality.
In a statement issued today, the men who have fought police and British troops for thirty six years have been ordered to lay down their weapons and take part in the democratic process.
The declaration has been welcomed by the British, Irish and American governments, but Unionists have given it a more cautious response. From Belfast, Gary Gibbon reports on the IRA's statement.
