Forest fires rage in France
Updated on 25 July 2007
Firefighters are battling fierce forest fires in the south of France.
The blaze has already destroyed 400 hectares of woodland in the region of Canjuer.
Around 600 firefighters, both military and civil, are battling the flames.
The fire chief in charge of operations said four water carrier planes are in operation dropping a fire retardant.
And they are having some luck, after a strong wind that had been stoking the flames and spreading the blaze died away.
Meanwhile, much of Italy is grappling with a heatwave that has caused brush fires in some regions that have killed at least two people.
