Italy quake: death toll reaches 50

Italian media report that more than 50 people are dead after a powerful earthquake in central Italy overnight.

The quake, measured at magnitude 6.3, struck at 3.32am near to the historic city of L'Aquila.

There have been a number of aftershocks and thousands of buildings have been destroyed.
