Italy quake: the web reaction
Updated on 06 April 2009
From Facebook to La Repubblica Alex Dimiziani reviews the local reaction to the earthquake that shook central Italy.
On Facebook, one person wrote:
"I am Abruzzese. I live in a town in Marsica. We are living in fear that there will be more tremors... help..."
Another commented:
"How is it possible that the seismic centre didn't predict an earthquake like this!!! Normally, they say that animals become mad before something like this happens, but how did this catastrophe occur and no one predict it !!!!"
"Unfortunately nothing can be done in the face of this kind of phenomenon... there's nothing left to do but pray and hope that the rest of the victims will be saved," wrote another sympathiser.
"There is something to be done: demonstrate solidarity in every possible manner," another replied.

In the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, one survivor said:
"I was under rubble for three hours. I couldn't escape. Fortunately two beams prevented the wall from falling on me.
"This is a city full of police stations but it was citizens digging with bare hands who pulled me out. I was shouting and begging for help. I could feel my mobile phone ring but I couldn't answer it.
"Finally, there was a small opening, hands appeared, they grasped me and pulled me out. In the building where I live there were about 20 apartments. I don't know how many people are still under there."
