Copenhagen protests lead to 100 arrests

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 16 December 2009

Police have detained more than 100 protesters following angry clashes outside the climate change summit in Copenhagen.

Tear gas was fired into the crowd as attempts were made to break through a security barrier outside the conference centre.

One police spokesman described the protest as "a riot".

The clashes came as the Danish government announced unexpectedly that the Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen was taking over as chairman of the talks from his Climate Change Minister Connie Hedegaard.
