EU chief's pledge on climate change
Updated on 06 July 2009
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said he will push China, India and Brazil at the G8 summit talks this week to do their fair share in cutting carbon dioxide emissions.
The EU chief said there is now "a sense of urgency" as time is running out for countries to lay out what they plan to contribute to get a new global climate change pact at the end of this year.
He said the 27-nation EU, the US and other rich, industrialised countries must sign up to "binding targets" to reduce emissions in order to persuade emerging powers such as China to sign up to the accord.
