Doctor describes forced married ordeal

An NHS doctor has described being taken captive by her parents in Bangladesh and forced to marry against her will.

Dr Humayra Abedin made headlines last December when she returned to the UK as a result of a High Court order made under the Forced Marriage Act, legislation allowing British courts to prevent someone being forced into marriage.

The 33-year-old - who came to the UK as a student seven years ago - had returned to Bangladesh after being told her mother was unwell.

However, she claims on arrival at her family's home she was manhandled into the property and immediately locked in a room.

Her passport and plane tickets were confiscated and she was forced to stay in the room for more than four months, supervised by several guards, before the marriage ceremony last November.

She has now given an interview describing her sense of relief when she was released.

"After about four and a half months, I went outside into the sun," she said. "I was like, oh my god, this is really happening. I just felt god is great."
