China emissions 'driven by West'
Updated on 06 October 2007
While developed countries are increasingly attacking China for climbing greenhouse gas emissions, Western demands for products are helping drive up the Asian country's ecological footprint, a report has claimed.
The New Economics Foundation's (NEF) report said the search for cheap products by consumers and businesses in the UK was turning China into our "environmental laundry" by shifting production - and its emissions - there.
According to the research, UK imports from China rose 18% last year to reach £15.6 billion of goods - including toys, electronics, clothes, furniture and 60,000 tonnes of Christmas decorations.
