'Irrational and unlawful': that was this morning's High Court verdict on the British government for its role in preventing Chagos islanders from returning to their homes.

The British Government forced the families from their remote island in the middle of the Indian Ocean three decades ago, so the Americans could build a major airbase on Diego Garcia.

The court said the Chagos islanders had been wrongly evicted more than 30 years ago by the British government.

It dismissed the government's argument that the decision - made using the rare Royal Prerogative - was beyond scrutiny.
