Call for Coral Sea conservation

Updated on 10 September 2008

Source PA News

The Australian government has been asked to establish a vast conservation area in the Coral Sea to protect not only marine animals and reefs but Second World War history.

The Pew Environment Group, partnered with marine scientists and two former Australian Navy officials, launched their proposal for a 400,000 square mile Coral Sea Heritage Park.

The organisers said the Coral Sea is one of the few remaining sanctuaries for animals that are overfished in other areas, and one of the last places where sharks, tuna, swordfish and marlin are still abundant.
