Call for ceasefire in Sri Lanka

Updated on 15 April 2009

Source PA News

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has called on the Sri Lankan government to announce a new ceasefire in its war with Tamil Tiger rebels.

Mr Miliband also said he "deplored" the use of civilians as human shields by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers.

He called on them to renounce terrorism and said laying down their arms was a "necessary element" for a long-term solution to the conflict.
