California is to sue the "big six" car manufacturers, claiming that they are responsible for 30 per cent of the state's carbon emissions.

The state claims the car makers are "among the world?s largest contributors to global warming". The six companies affected are General Motors, Toyota, Ford, Honda, Chrysler and Nissan,

This is the latest in a series of moves by the Golden State - the world's twelfth largest polluter - to curb environmental pollution.

Last month it passed a law demanding a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020. And a 2003 law requires car makers to force cuts in emissions from cars and trucks.
