George Bush's family are gathering at the president's Texas ranch ahead of his daughter Jenna's wedding.
The 26-year-old author and school teacher will marry long-time boyfriend Henry Hager in front of around 200 guests at an outdoor service at the 1,600-acre property in Crawford on Saturday.
Asked if he was excited as he left Andrews Air Force base bound for central Texas, George Bush smiled and gave a thumbs-up.
White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said: "He's looking forward to it. He's excited like any proud father is to see one of his daughters get married.
"I think he's also going to make sure he gets a good night's sleep tonight so he can stay up late the rest of the weekend and enjoy all the activities."
Mr Bush is known to prefer to be in bed by 9pm.
Mr Johndroe added: "I think the activities of the weekend are going to be really a private celebration for Jenna and Henry's family and friends."
Miss Bush - who has a twin sister Barbara - and former White House aide Mr Hager, who turned 30 on Friday, opted for the low-key private ceremony in the belief that a White House wedding would be too formal and stuffy.
A White House spokesman said the wedding will be closed to all media and no details are expected to be released on the day itself.
Miss Bush made international headlines in September last year when she said the Iraq war was "very complicated" and said that there were many ways for people to serve their country.
