Brazilian cities hit by blackouts
Updated on 11 November 2009
A massive power failure blacked out Brazil's two largest cities and other parts of the country for more than two hours, leaving millions of people in the dark.
The blackout has been blamed on the sudden failure of a huge hydro-electric dam which borders neighbouring Paraguay. Power was also lost across Paraguay, but only for about 20 minutes.
The huge Itaipu dam stopped producing 17,000 megawatts of power, resulting in outages in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and several other big Brazilian cities.
