Bird flu cull in Germany
Updated on 09 September 2007
Around 180,000 ducks have been culled in Germany amid fears a bird flu outbreak could spread.
The cull took place at a farm in Hofing, Bavaria, close to a confirmed outbreak in Wachenroth, where bird flu was identified on August 25.
Around 28,000 animals have also been slaughtered in the neighbouring village of Nittenau, where antibodies were discovered relating to the H5N1 strain of the disease.
Dead ducks found at a poultry farm in Wachenroth tested positive for H5N1 and the farms in Hofing and Nittenau had business links with the farm in Wachenroth.
Authorities said the cull was a precautionary measure.
They insist the action was justified by the test results.
