Big cats shiver in big chill

It's curtains for the animals in a zoo in central India as a cold snap sweeps across the country.

Keepers in the Gandhi Zoological Park in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, have been forced to hang drapes made of dried straw around the cages to insulate them.

Animals have also been provided with straw mats, sacks and blankets as temperatures plunge to unseasonable lows.

The big cats, who feel the cold more than other animals, have even had portable heaters installed in their enclosures.

Zoo spokesman S K Mittal added: "We have installed wooden plans on the floor so that the animals don't have to sit on the cold floor.

"We are also serving these animals nutritious food to help them cope up with the cold weather and keep them warm."
