Berlin brothel's climax for climate offer
Updated on 13 July 2009
A Berlin brothel is fighting climate change and the recession at the same time by offering a discount to clients who arrive by bicycle.
The Maison d'envie brothel in the German capital says it is getting three to five new patrons a day who have been tempted by the discount.
Owner Thomas Goetz said: "The recession has hit our industry hard. Obviously we hope that the discount will attract more people. It's good for business, it's good for the environment and it's good for the girls."
Customers who arrive by bike or who can prove they took public transport get a five euro (£4.31) discount from the 70 euro (£60) fee for a 45-minute session.
Mr Goetz said the environmentally-friendly offer is working, adding: "We have around three to five new customers coming in daily to take advantage of the discount."
He said the green rebate has also helped alleviate traffic and parking congestion in the neighbourhood.
Germany is one of the few countries in the world where prostitution is legal. It has about 400,000 prostitutes who, since 2002, have been allowed to enter formal labour contracts.
