Sony and Toshiba are fighting for supremacy in the home entertainment market.

Remember the battle of the two video formats back in the 80's, when VHS won over Betamax?

Well, it looks like we're set for a rerun. The home entertainment giants Sony and Toshiba are frantically working on the next generation of high-definition DVD players and discs, the two formats are incompatible, and film companies are split between them.

If no compromise is reached, it's the consumer who'll be left in the lurch - stuck with discs that won't play in any machine if they pick the losing format
