At least 125 killed in Iraq blasts
Updated on 31 March 2007
At least 125 people were killed and more than 150 wounded in five Iraq suicide blasts which targeted crowded Shiite marketplaces.
The savage attacks came as a new American ambassador began his first day on the job, and Senate Democrats ignored a veto threat and approved a bill to require US President George Bush to start withdrawing troops.
Including other violence the death toll reached 181, on a day which marked the end of the seventh week of the latest US-Iraqi military drive to curtail violence in Baghdad and surrounding regions.
