Zardari reinstates top judge

By Lindsey Hilsum

Updated on 16 March 2009

Protests in Pakistan give way to celebrations after President Asif Ali Zardari reinstates the former chief justice who was sacked two years ago.

The surprise move has helped quell street protests which threatened to engulf the country in violence.

The case of the chief justice became a cause celebre for anti-government lawyers and was supported by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Britain and the US fear a further slide in to chaos would only help the Taliban and al-Qaida in Pakistan.
