Sri Lanka cricketers hurt in attack

Updated on 03 March 2009

By Nick Paton Walsh, James Blake

Five policemen are killed and six players injured after gunmen attack the Sri Lankan cricket team on tour in Pakistan.

The Pakistani authorities say twelve gunmen were involved and that the attack had strong similarities to the killings in Mumbai in India last year.

The team were on their way to resume the second test match in the Pakistani city of Lahore when masked men armed with rifles and rocket launchers attacked the team's bus at the Liberty roundabout in the centre of the city, just yards from the Gaddafi stadium where the match was taking place.

The attacks could be the final straw for international cricket in Pakistan. The remainder of the Sri Lanka tour has been cancelled.

Last month the International Cricket Council announced that the Champions Trophy will not be played there due to security concerns and unless the situation improves, Pakistan's ability to host some of the matches in the 2011 World Cup is in serious doubt.
