Sharif's brief return, swift departure

He barely left the tarmac.

As supporters clashed with police outside Islamabad airport - Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was thrown out of the country - after a short-lived attempt to return from exile.

Mr Sharif, who's now in Saudi Arabia, arrived in Islamabad this morning vowing to end the military rule of General Musharraf - who ousted him in a coup eight years ago.

But his plans for a triumphal motorcade were abruptly thwarted as paramilitary police surrounded his plane, arrested him, and deported him.
