Reuniting survivors from Beichuan

Updated on 17 May 2008

By Lindsey Hilsum

Survivors from Beichuan, near the epicentre of China's earthquake, have fled to Mianyang amid fears that a river might burst its banks.

The official death toll in China has now risen to 29,000 after this week's earthquake.

But the government says it expects this figure to climb to 50,000. Five million others have been made homeless, and survivors are still being pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings.

In the badly hit town of Beichuan, near the epicentre of the quake, thousands of people fled their homes because of fears a river could burst its banks.

Channel 4 News's Lindsey Hilsum has met survivors from a Beichuan school now displaced to Mian Yeng.
