Lindsey Hilsum's Beijing, part 1

Updated on 08 July 2008

By Lindsey Hilsum

International editor and Channel 4 News's first ever Beijing correspondent offers a personal view of her 'hometown'.

Lindsey Hilsum became China correspondent in 2006 when ITN, makers of Channel 4 News, opened up a Beijing bureau. Here she offers a guided tour of the Chinese capital as the 2008 Olympics fast approaches.

The tour starts in Ritan Park, about a mile or so east of Tiananmen Square.

From there it's the central business district, not a favourite part of the city. Finally, to the hutongs (alleyways) just east of the Drum Tower, which is due north of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.
