Humanitarian crisis in Swat valley
Updated on 28 May 2009
A humanitarian disaster is looming after the Pakistan military’s action in the Swat valley. Lindsey Hilsum reports.
Dozens of people have been killed and injured in Pakistan in a series of bomb attacks in the north western city of Peshawar.
After yesterday's deadly attack in Lahore, the latest bombs followed an ominous warning from the Taliban that they are targeting cities in retaliation for Pakistan's military offensive in the north.
In the Swat valley the army says it has killed more than 1,000 Taliban militants in the past month.
It also claims to have recaptured most of the area's main city, Mingora.
But it is at a huge cost - more than 2 million people have fled their homes, with thousands in refugee camps like Mardan, where our international editor Lindsey Hilsum went to see the conditions.
