Beijing women face 're-education' after protest request rejected
Updated on 21 August 2008
Two elderly women have been sentenced to a year each of "re-education through labour" after their application to protest was turned down five times.
They wanted to draw attention to the inadequate compensation they say the local authority offered when their homes were demolished seven years ago, but now, despite both being nearly 80, they've been threatened with labour camp.
The Chinese government designated three Beijing parks as protest zones during the Olympic Games.
