US welcomes Beckham move

Reaction has been warm in the US to the news that David Beckham is to play football there.

"The main thing for me is to improve the soccer and change history really," David Beckham insisted today in a message for supporters of his new Los Angeles Galaxy team.

The beautiful game may not be the most popular sport in the United States - and it certainly isn't called football.

But across the Atlantic there's been a warm reaction to the Beckhams' impending arrival. One sports pundit described it as "Tiger Woods meets Brad Pitt on the red carpet".

And even Madonna proclaimed herself a fan.
