US foils JFK bomb plot

The US has captured three suspects in an alleged conspiracy to blow up fuel tanks and pipelines at New York's JFK Airport.
A fourth suspect, Abdul Nur, is being hunted by police in Trinidad, where two of the men - Abdul Kadir and Kareem Ibrahim - were arrested. Another man, Russell Defreitas, was arrested in Brooklyn on Friday.
Although never progressed beyond the planning stage, it was described as "one of the most chilling plots imaginable" by US officials.
Mark Mershon of the FBI said: "They took extensive measures to seek expert advice, finances and explosives."
The FBI does not believe there were direct links to al-Qaeda, but the court documents say they had been seeking backing from an extremist Muslim group Jamaat al-Muslimeen, who were behind a 1990 coup in Trinidad.
Experts say that this once again highlights the perceived threat posed by home-grown terrorism. Last year, plots were foiled to attack the Sears Tower in Chicago and New York's transit system. Only last month, a plan to attack soliders at New Jersey's Fort Dix was disrupted.
