Did US sheriff breach human rights?

Updated on 11 April 2009

By Sarah Smith

The self-styled toughest sheriff in the west is in trouble amid allegations of racial prejudice.

He calls himself America's toughest sheriff.

Joe Arpaio is famous for putting prisoners in an open desert jail and for appearing in his own reality TV show.

But now the sheriff of Arizona's most populous county is under fire over his attempts to catch and deport illegal immigrants.

He is under investigation for alleged human rights violations, including racial profiling.

And some law enforcement officials have told Channel 4 News the sheriff's policies are harming the battle against organised Mexican drugs gangs.
