Wednesday 10 December 2008: Barack Obama calls for the man arrested for conspiring to sell his Senate seat to step down.
The president-elect calls for the Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, who was arrested yesteday for conspiring to sell Obama's Senate seat, to step down.
"Under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois," said Obama spokesperson Robert Gibbs.
It wouldn't really be a day of Obama-watch without another staffing flurry. Steven Chu, who shared the 1997 Nobel Prize for physics, will be energy secretary, according to CNN.
Chu, director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is a former chairman of the physics department at Stanford University in California and head of the electronics research laboratory at Bell Labs.
Obama campaigned on the importance of alternative energy sources.
Meanwhile, in the centre of Chicago, demonstrators rallied against lay-offs and repossessions.
