Somali pirate hijack - on film

Updated on 14 July 2009

By Girish Juneja

One of the hostages taken when Somali pirates seized a Ukrainian ship last year recorded the event on his mobile phone. Girish Juneja reports.

They were held hostage for months by Somali pirates.

But one of the sailors on board a Ukrainian container ship managed to film scenes of their captivity on his mobile phone - at great risk to his own safety.

The MV Fania, loaded with tanks and heavy weaponry, was seized last September.

After leaving the gulf of Aden, the vessel was 200 miles off the coast of Somalia in the Indian ocean when it was attacked by the pirates.

The ship was finally released in February.
