Can political rage work for the Lib Dems?

By Rags Martel

Updated on 23 April 2010

Fresh from their success at putting Rage Against the Machine at the top of the Christmas charts, a Facebook group are attempting to get Nick Clegg into Downing Street.

It is being organised by the team behind the internet campaign that beat Simon Cowell's X-Factor  winner Joe McElderry to the Christmas top spot.

Ben Stockman and Jon Morter used a Facebook group to secure Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name Of to the top of the charts. Now they have created We Got Rage Against The Machine To Power - We Can Get The Lib Dems Into Office.

Stockman, a life long Liberal Democrat, believes internet is a good campaign tool, "It has never been used for politics in this way before. So it's just a question, what if this works?"

The Facebook group has picked up more than 135,000 supporters in a matter of days.

"As we found out at Christmas, Facebook, Twitter and social networks in general can really make a difference", Morter said.

There are other unusual election viral videos. Former Labour spin doctor, Alastair Campbell, can be seen miming with former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe  for the Total Politics magazine.

And then there is the pop duo called the Cameron Girls with their ode to the Tory leader.

The internet got Rage Against the Machine to number one against all the odds. We will have to wait until the election result to find out the power of the web in politics.
