Wilko waxwork in Trafalgar Square

Updated on 19 October 2007

A waxwork figure of England's fly-half golden boy Jonny Wilkinson has gone on display in Trafalgar Square.

Hundreds of fans were on hand to see their hero's statue go up ahead of Saturday's World Cup final against South Africa in Paris.

Wilkinson, who kicked the points against Australia to win the 2003 final, will be crucial to England's hopes of winning the trophy.

Jonny was instrumental in clinching last Saturday's dramatic victory over France, scoring a penalty and late drop kick.

Madamme Tussaud's Ben Lovett, who was responsible for installing the statue in the square, said: "He is poised to kick South Africa into touch. He caused quite a stir among passing fans."

The waxwork was to set to make only the briefest of appearances ahead of tomorrow's match, and will be taken down later this evening.
