US government threatens to withdraw intelligence

By Andy Davies

Updated on 04 February 2009

David Davis calls on the government to respond to allegations that Britain was complicit in the torture of Binyam Mohamed.

Mohamed admitted terrorist charges, but has since claimed he was tortured and war crimes charges against him were dropped last year.

Lord Justice Thomas and Mr Justice Lloyd decided not to release the evidence because the US had threatened to withdraw cooperation over terrorist intelligence and, they said, "the public of the United Kingdom would be put at risk".

They've kept the dossier secret but decided to go public on the US threat to review its intelligence-sharing relationship with Britain if the evidence was made public.

Though the foreign office says the threat still stands under Mr Obama, the British Embassy in Washington has told Channel 4 News they have not asked.
