Up-front academy fee scrapped

The £2m fee which firms have to lodge before they can sponsor an academy school is to be scrapped. Ben King reports.

From September 2011 businesses and voluntary organisations will instead be assessed on their suitability to run such schools.

Universities and other educational establishments which wanted to open academies were exempted from the fee two years ago.
