The number of people declaring themselves bankrupt is 19 per cent up on a year ago.

The number of companies going bust fell back slightly compared to the last quarter of 2008, but is still up by 50 per cent on a year ago.

These figures come as a parliamentary committee lays the blame for the banking crisis at the feet of the bankers.
