Terrorist Barot 'attacked in prison'

Updated on 15 July 2007

By Lucy Manning

The terrorist plotter Dhiren Barot has been attacked in his first year in prison, his lawyer has said.

Barot had been badly burnt while in in his first year of a 40 year sentence at Frankland prison in County Durham.

Barot shot on a video on a reconnaissance trip to America. An al-Qaeda operative, he planned to murder thousands there and in Britain. In the UK he plotted to blow up limousines packed with gas cylinders.

The prison service has confirmed a prisoner was scolded in an attack by another prisoner and that an investigation is ongoing, but his solicitor believes this supports her call for Muslim prisoners to be given special rights in jail.
