By Channel 4 News

Updated on 09 December 2009

Channel 4 News analyses the language used in Alistair Darling's pre-budget report and finds 'tax', 'economy' and 'support' were his main topics.

The pre-budget report snowcloud

So to the Snowcloud, which analysed the Chancellor's speech word by word and visually represents the number of times he's used each word by size.

So the more he says something, the bigger the word on the cloud. here then is an insight into Mr Darling's priorities.

The word TAX appeared most often with SPENDING not far behind,...achieving the same number of utterances as GROWTH in the speech.

RECOVERY equalled RECESSION in frequency...and the least number of appearances goes to the word DEBT.

Run the cursor over the words to see how often they appear.

Then click the word to find out how many times the chancellor used it, and in what context.

About Snowclouds

Snowclouds are a Flash application designed by Channel 4 News's senior programme director, Martin Collett.

These interactive word clouds condense the text of a speech into one handy, interactive image. The more frequently a word is used during a speech, the bigger it is displayed. Clicking on the word brings up the transcript of the speech and shows the contexts in which the word was used.

The Snowcloud generator ignores common words such as "and", "the" and "there" to get a clearer picture of the distinct content of the speech.

As well as any word with fewer than four letters those listed here are ignored by this Snowcloud (not all of the words in the list necessarily cropped up in the speech).
