Commenting on Sarah's appointment, Channel 4 News Editor Jim Gray said:

"Sarah is an exceptional journalist who is playing at the top of her game. Sarah has that rare but invaluable combination of sharp journalism along with very engaging television presentation and story-telling.

Over the past year, Sarah has become the 'face of More 4' stamping her authority and character on our news service for Channel 4's move into public service broadcasting for digital viewers. I know she'll continue her success in the Washington role."

Sarah says:

"Reporting from Washington has been a long held ambition and I am thrilled to be going to the US at such an exciting time.

I am very much looking forward to covering American stories for both Channel 4 News and More4 News. I will be truly sorry to leave the More4 Newsroom as being part of a team that has established a brand new programme on an entirely new channel has been a proud achievement. I am glad I can continue to appear on the programme from America."

Sarah first joined Channel 4 News in 1998. She has a proven track record of reporting on the major stories of the day, both home and abroad - and including the last US presidential elections.

Sarah's reporting from the Madrid bombings in 2004 contributed to Channel 4 News winning an International Emmy Award (for the second year in a row). Over the years, Sarah has also been the programme's Scotland Correspondent. She was previously political Correspondent at five news (also with ITN), worked in Northern Ireland, and has also enjoyed a stint with Newsnight as a producer.

The Washington post became vacant when, after a highly successful run of three years, Jonathan Rugman returned to the London newsroom at the ITN headquarters to take up the role of Channel 4 News Diplomatic Correspondent.

Jonathan has been with Channel 4 News since 1999 when he joined the programme as Business Correspondent. Sarah will take up her new post in early 2007.
