Rooney ankle could take six weeks to heal

By Channel 4 News

Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney is reported to have suffered a sprained ankle in last night's match in Germany - which may not heal until mid-May.

For Channel 4 News, Jane Deith told Jon Snow that Wayne Rooney has had the ankle scan but that there is still no official word on the nature of the injury.

The Manchester United striker flew back from Germany this afternoon. He was put straight into a car and taken to hospital for the scan. He left, as he went in, on crutches, his foot in a protective boot.

Jane Deith said he was understood to have suffered a sprained ankle, which will take a maximum six weeks to heal.

He should be fine to fly out with England in June to Johannesburg, although it is not clear how much effect his injury will have on England’s performance.

Some fans are saying the injury is a good thing because it will force him to rest in the run-up to the World Cup. Others are concerned the injury will disrupt the superb form Rooney has enjoyed this season.

Manchester United fans, though, have a lot more to worry about because the striker is central to their Premiership and Champions League ambitions.
