Queen costs us 62p each

Updated on 28 June 2007

British taxpayers forked out 62p each to cover the expenses of the Queen and the Royal Family last year.

The figure is the same as the previous financial year, royal accountants said.

The total cost of keeping the monarchy in the year to March 31 fell by 0.3 per cent to £37.3 million, it was revealed.

This was mainly due to a reduction in the refurbishment costs at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland, the report said.

It added that the figure was offset by increased costs in dealing with a greater number of freedom of information inquiries.

Earlier this week, figures from Prince Charles' household showed he is carbon neutral and has cut his CO2 emissions by 9 per cent over the last year.

The report included for the first time the heir to the throne's carbon footprint, which was found to be 3,425 tonnes of CO2.
