A 41-year-old man has been arrested in the West Midlands by officers investigating a hit-and-run collision involving a policewoman in west London.

Police had been hunting for a suspected fraudster who ran over Detective Constable Catherine Corbett, 39, as she tried to arrest him.

Two officers, both male, sustained minor injuries in the collision which left Ms Corbett in a critical condition.

The man was arrested in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham on suspicion of the attempted murder of Ms Corbett

DC Corbett has served with the force for 18 years and remains in a critical condition after undergoing surgery at the Charing Cross Hospital .

She is part of the Economic Crime Unit and had been in plain clothes when the attack took place.

A spokeswoman from West Midlands Police said: "She is now out of surgery and everything went well, but her condition is still critical.

The incident happened shortly after 8am at the Sheraton Hotel in Bath Road, on the north perimeter of the airport.

A woman handed herself into police in London earlier in the day in connection with the incident.
