A man who allegedly stabbed a woman while he was wearing a Phantom of the Opera mask has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Sehrish Waqar Sheikh, 23, died after being attacked at St George's International College in Plaistow, east London, on Monday.

Rafi Ullah, 29, of Jesmond Avenue, Wembley, appeared at Stratford Magistrates Court charged with her murder and causing grievous bodily harm to a second woman who was also stabbed in the incident.

He was remanded in custody to reappear at the same court on Monday.

Meanwhile, a teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found stabbed in the early hours of Saturday, police said.

The 21-year-old victim was found collapsed on the ground in Murton, Co Durham, after a call was made to the ambulance service.

Durham Police said there were spots of blood on the pavement and a knife was found lying nearby.

The victim, who was from the Murton area, was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
