Extra time has been granted to detectives questioning two people after a police officer was critically injured in a hit-and-run.

Detective Constable Catherine Corbett and three other officers, all from West Midlands Police, were attempting to arrest a man near Heathrow Airport on Friday.

DC Corbett, 39, was hit as the suspect reversed away from the scene in a blue Peugeot 207, and two other male officers sustained minor injuries.

Police arrested a 41-year-old man in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, on suspicion of her attempted murder.

A woman in her early 30s was also arrested in connection with the incident after she went to a London police station.

A magistrate on Saturday extended the custody time limit for the pair, Scotland Yard said.

DC Corbett remained in a critical condition after undergoing surgery on Friday night and was in the neurological unit at Charing Cross Hospital, where her parents were at her bedside.

Ms Corbett, who was awarded a commendation for outstanding work in 1993, had been in London for two days investigating the case before the incident.

The fraud suspect had been wanted for approximately a year, police said.
