Online marking causes 'wrong exam grades'
Updated on 22 September 2007
An increase in the use of an online marking scheme is the cause of the rising number of inaccurate exam grades, a teaching union said.
The National Association of Head Teachers is reportedly collecting evidence of inaccurate results and demanding for papers to marked again.
Clarissa Williams, of the National Association of Head Teachers said: "Talking to my colleagues at the NAHT, there are many schools where there are problems; there seems to be a pattern. My own association is gathering that evidence right now."
But the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, which oversees exams, denied that the use of technology is "the main issue".
Isabell Nisbett, from the QCA said: "The technology is not the main issue... but we will look at every complaint."
Exam board Edexcel digitally scans nine out of ten papers, which are marked online by examiners using the ePen system.
Edexcel said the system made it easier to identify potential cheats and flag up any candidates that had performed significantly above expectations.
