Actor Ross Kemp has launched a campaign to send Christmas presents to UK troops overseas.

The charity uk4u Thanks! has arranged for 24,500 gift boxes to be sent to servicemen fighting or in hospital abroad.

Each box is the size of a standard ration pack and contains about 20 non-perishable items - but the exact contents are being kept secret until they are opened on Christmas Day.

Kemp, who recently returned from filming a TV show in Afghanistan, sped up the Thames in an inflatable boat for the launch.

Accompanied by Defence Minister Kevan Jones, the former Eastenders action man met armed forces personnel who have recently returned from combat.

Kemp said: "When you're out there, eating cold rations and someone sends you something that reminds you of home, it puts a smile on your face and lifts your spirits.

"When I was in Afghanistan the guys looked after me tremendously and I'm doing this to make sure they get something back."
