A revolutionary eye operation is bringing new hope for blind people.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world and sufferers can lose their sight within three months of getting the condition.

More than a quarter of a million people have been diagnosed with the disease in the UK.

But a surgical team at Kings College Hospital in London is pioneering a new treatment that can improve symptoms within three weeks.

Surgeons remove gel from inside the eye then treat the macula - a spot near the centre of the retina - with a radiation probe.
