Heathrow rail alternatives unveiled
Updated on 29 January 2009
Opponents of a third runway for Heathrow are due to launch a plan to make the airport the centre of a rail network which could reduce demand for flights and take one million cars off the roads.
The launch comes a day after Labour rebels slashed the Government's majority to 19 on an opposition motion demanding a rethink of the Heathrow expansion.
Two ministerial aides whose west London seats will be among those most affected by the third runway, Andrew Slaughter and Virendra Sharma, quit their jobs as parliamentary private secretaries to vote against the Government.
